We recently caught up with Amanda Brown, author of The Field Guide to Playing the Field and creator of Playing the Field Game. We chatted about her book and game, which are hailed as "a great dating compass" and "matter of fact about topics that make most people squirm a little."

What makes this book different from all the other relationship books out there?

This is a dose of common-sense, no-holds-barred dating advice from someone who has lived it, done it and is still doing it. I'm still right there in the trenches with you. The difference is...I've developed simple communication techniques to work out a way to make this dating game a lot easier for all of us.

How can I use the book to complement the game?

The game is the tool to start the communication; the book provides the cues for listening. Plus, I explain date scenarios for each deck and the full list of body language cues - study these and commit them to memory! (Best commitment you will make in this lifetime.) Added bonus - my signature cocktail...great to mix and sip while reading and playing!

If I have the game, do I need the book?

YES! I can guarantee that you'll want it after playing the cards with a couple of different guys. Some of the stories in the book will help you determine whether he's a keeper or a kicker.

Are you still dating? Why?

Of course! How could I give advice on what's really happening out there in the dating world if I weren't knee-deep in it myself?!? Writing the book has made me realize that certain guys I've dated will never be asked to play the game. Ever!

One evening of their company and I realize that:
a) the sparks aren't there
b) he's not my type - Period! Or...
c) he has psychotic qualities that alert me to run in the opposite direction.

The game and the guide are great ways to weed out the guys you would never want to date to the ones that you should give a chance. Right now, I'm using the game to narrow down my pair and a spare to the ONE.

Can I get a sneak peek at some of the book?

Well, okay...BUT only if you promise to read it right now at this instant! None of that "when I have the chance" or after the next bad break-up. I didn't put all of this down on paper for you to use reactively. I put it on paper for you to use proactively. Wildfires are no fun! So dive right in and tell me if you haven't been there or done that before too!

Where do you find inspiration?

I'm inspired by people and their actions. I'm such a people-watcher, always have been. If we are talking and you see my eyes dart suddenly, that means that I have picked up on someone in the background who is up to something - even the slightest movements are sometimes the best. Those moments provide the material used to create the games and books that I offer.

I'll also admit that a great bottle of wine with friends is tops on my list of inspirations, as well. The conversations that are created as the bottom of the bottle comes into view are some of the best that I have when I'm dreaming up more big ideas.

What drives you to create, to act, to reach out?

My passion and love for what I do! Most would consider what I do to be a tremendous amount of work. I rarely take a day off from my sun-up to midnight routine, but I consider what I do to be the most fun ever. Watching how people light up when they start talking while playing the game, or stories of how they related to something I wrote in my book, or stories of how playing the game brought them closer to the person they were dating. (Small secret here but, one of my friends has told me that I have to cut my birthday trip in June short because he wants me there when he proposes to his girlfriend...who he connected with one evening while his group of friends was playing my game). Those are the stories that I LIVE for!
